Taking care of coves is a good way to have one of the most beautiful plants at home, a plant that will give a different touch to your garden or pond and that will make you the envy of all your neighbors.

The calla lilies are better known as the water lilies, since they are very similar to their brothers on earth, but they have a particularity that differentiates them, a key difference that consists of the theme of water and humidity.

While the original calla lily hates water and can die if it has too much water, the calla lily needs very moist soil and lots of water, as its name suggests. In this way, this difference makes them a different plant that must be taken into account when planting.

Taking care of calla lilies is not very complicated and is considered even easier than taking care of standard lilies due to the issue of water, however, it is a plant that, as always happens, has certain peculiarities that must be taken into account if you want to achieve success. Plant it.

For example, the issue of humidity and light is fundamental; something that will make the difference between a healthy plant and a plant that dies. The person who knows how to take care of calla lilies will be able to keep them healthy and have a great quality garden or pond in her house.

The good news in all of this is that as usual, caring for this plant does not require advanced gardening knowledge. In the first place, you don’t even need to have had a plant, since it is so easy to care for, that actually anyone can do it, even if you have never cared for anything.

Secondly, we will be there step by step explaining everything to you, since all you have to do is follow the following steps to the letter, something that makes caring for coves never so easy.

Instructions for caring for callas or water lilies

  1. Humid and hot area: First of all, we must look for a good area to plant the water lilies and to take care of the coves, since as we have already explained before; the water lily needs a specific place to be able to grow properly. The way to do this is with an area with high humidity, which will ensure that the lily always has enough moisture to grow healthy. The ideal place is near a pond, which will help you to have a humid area with enough nutrients to have a high quality of fertilizer and humidity in the area. Of course, we also have to take into account that it needs something of light to be able to grow and above all, to be able to have a sufficient number and quantity of flowers. However, we should not go too far with the light, because if we have too much light on the lilies, they could suffer damage to their structure and end up being completely damaged. A good place is in a pond behind a tree, where we only have a few hours of sunlight.
  2. Water every two days: This plant requires a lot of moisture, a huge amount that will make us have to water every so often. The ideal time for the soil to always be moist is two days, that is, every 48 hours; we must pour water to ensure that the soil is moist enough. In this way, we will achieve a very well cared for plant that will have no problem having a large amount of water. However, we should not water every day, because oddly enough, this plant is not entirely aquatic and could drown. For this reason, it is usually planted near ponds, but not inside them and so the soil will be moist, but the water lilies will not drown. Of course, water every two days, because if you take longer and the soil dries, the plant will begin to wither and will be damaged,
  3. Fertilize a lot: In addition to needing a lot of moisture, coves need a lot of fertilizer on the ground. Compost is our method of nourishing the earth and to ensure that it has a large amount of soil rich in minerals and essential salts for the plant. It shares this with the ground lily, which also needs a large amount of fertilizer to function properly. As with the rest of the plants, we will be able to use both compost fertilizer and natural manure-based fertilizer, using the one that suits you best (bear in mind the bad smell).  The only rule is that you must compost very frequently, specifically every 15 days, making sure that the soil is always well nourished and in this way, you can have a plant with a large amount of mineral salts and that it grows in the most correct way possible. This is more or less double the amount that is put on other plants, in which it is put every month, something that will make us have a very fertile plant,
  4. Beware of aphids: One of the biggest enemies of coves and the ones that we have to keep more at bay if we want to guarantee that the plant is well cared for are the dreaded aphids. These insects, as their name suggests, are like fleas but much larger and are the scourge of many plants, such as the famous orchids. For this reason, we must be very careful with these, taking care of the plant so that they do not come out.  Go to your nearest florist for pesticide and do not hesitate to throw it when you detect them, because if you do it in time, you will avoid greater evils, but if you wait too long, the aphids will eat the cove completely and you will leave run out of flowers this summer. For this reason, you must act before them, also throwing a little water on them to kill them. In addition, we could have some plant diseases, which will make you remove the plant from the root in the affected area, to avoid this type of contagion.
  5. Transplant in winter: When it is winter, many of these plants die from the cold, but we are left with a kind of fruit or tuber. This tuber helps us to plant it again and not lose the plant; however, this tuber should be stored in winter to avoid damage. The way to do it is in a cool and dry place, but it must be ventilated to get the oxygen necessary for life. In addition to that, you must prevent it from being cold, since that is why we have transplanted it. Once spring arrives, we can plant again and start over, although if you live in a place where it is not too cold, you will not need to do this and you can leave it without transplanting, something that will make your life a little easier.
