Instructions for planting mint
Step by step to plant mint:
- You can choose to plant mint in your garden, directly on the ground, or in pots. The advantage of doing it inside a pot or pot is that it allows you mobility: you can change its place whenever you want and thus take advantage of the maximum hours of sunlight. In this article we are going to explain how to plant it in pots. However, the steps are practically the same to do it directly on the ground. We hope that it will help you and that very soon you will be able to enjoy your own mint.
- Unlike other aromatic herbs, such as peppermint, mint can be planted at any time of the year, so now you know, whether it’s winter or summer, spring or autumn, you can spend a few minutes gardening and do your own mint plantation.
- You can choose to plant mint cuttings or directly seeds. If you decide on cuttings, it is recommended that you put them in a jar with plenty of water for at least a month, so that they take root and are easier to plant.
- Get a good pot or pot where you can plant the mint. If the pot or pot you use does not have a drainage hole, we recommend that you place a few river pebbles at its base to prevent the water that accumulates below from rotting the roots over time. If you opt for models with a hole, remember to use a special plastic tray for pots or pots that retains excess water from irrigation and does not stain the surfaces of your terrace.
- Next, you should fill the pot or pot up to half its capacity with soil and mulch. This will be enough to later place the seeds or cuttings.
- If you opt for seeds, it will only be necessary to draw a path in the center of the pot or pot if it is elongated, or a circle if it is circular. Then take a handful in your hands and spread it evenly across the path you’ve created.
- If you decide to plant the mint with cuttings, make sure to do it when they have already taken root. In this case, it is better to plant the cuttings from the center to the sides, as it is easier to divide the space you have in this way. Do it one at a time and leaving adequate space between each cutting so that the roots grow correctly both downwards and to the sides. Take the cutting with one hand, place it on the path you have created and cover it with soil leaving a third of the mint protruding from the soil. It spreads the earth without crushing it. You have to do the same exercise with each cutting you want to plant in that pot or pot.
- Remember that the soil that covers the seeds or the cuttings must leave 1/3 of the free space in the pot. That is, do not fill the pot or pot up to the top with soil, otherwise it will cost you much more to water them later and you will end up staining everything with soil.
