How and When To Plant Mango

This fruit grows between rather warm temperatures; it is not able to withstand any type of cold, much less frost. It is not recommended that it be planted, where there are low temperatures, it is better to protect it, or put it in a greenhouse.

The first thing to do to plant or germinate a mango is to eat the fruit and leave the bone, inside it is the seed, and the yellow layer that surrounds it is only a kind of shell, which must be opened, to remove what it contains inside. It can be opened with a knife, always very carefully sticking the tip through the corners until it opens, trying not to damage the seeds inside.

Once the seed has been extracted, an ideal environment must be created for it to germinate. Take a container, it doesn’t matter if it’s plastic or glass, and a couple of sheets from a roll of kitchen paper, and place it at the bottom of the bowl, although you could also use cotton if you don’t have hand that kind of paper. The seed is placed lying down, flat on the paper, and then we cover it, leaving it completely wrapped, in order to provide it with the darkness, which it needs to germinate. Next, you have to provide it with the moisture it needs, and for this, you must pour water on it, leaving the napkin completely wet, but not watering down the seed, if there is excess water, it must be removed immediately, or the process will not be carried out correctly. Another of the conditions, in this case climatic, that it needs for germination is a correct temperature, for this reason it can be placed in a closed place such as a box, a cupboard, near a stove, or next to a window, so that it receives sunlight, and acquire a comfortable temperature.

You must have several days, a week or five days, at least to be able to see how, now, some sprout comes out than another, if you observe that the paper, or napkin, stays dry, you have to add water again, until let it be soaked.

In about ten or twelve days, the container is taken where the seed was underneath, and it is uncovered, and it will be possible to observe how a root of a size close to ten centimeters has already grown from its interior. When it is observed that this root has come out, it is possible to sow.

This fruit is not specific to one type of soil, but is capable of adapting to most of them, but if it needs to be well drained, having a pH that is not below 5.5 and does not reach the 8. In order for enough fruits to grow from the tree, the soil must receive a fundamental element, such as nitrogen, and also phosphorus or potassium, all of which are essential for good production.

Where to sow the seed?

To plant it, you should take a pot that has a good bottom, with about twenty-five or thirty centimeters. Inside it you can make a mixture such as the substrate and the humus of an animal such as the earthworm, these nutrients will favor the growth of the mango. After that, take a pointed object such as a stick, a pen or a pencil, and a hole will be made that has the same depth as the length of the root that has grown in the seed that has germinated. It is important that if the root has been born very close to the seed, be careful not to split it, since it must be sown vertically, in a straight line. Then it is covered with the substrate, but it is not completely covered, a part is left uncovered, the only thing that has to be completely covered is the root that has grown. It must be given good watering, which are not abundant, but light, but continuously, the substrate must not be left dry, above all it must be kept under surveillance in the first weeks so that a good germination of the fruit occurs. Next, it is placed again at a point in the house where it receives direct sunlight and acquires the correct temperature. You can continue using the technique from the beginning and with some sheets of kitchen paper or moistened napkin; you can cover the part of the seed that had not been covered with the substrate. It will be left like this for a few days, and little by little you can see how the stem will grow. It will be in a week when you can really appreciate the growth of the stem in a remarkable way. Once a fundamental part such as the stem has been formed correctly, the napkin will no longer be necessary, so it can be removed and left again near the window. As the months go by, with the right light and heat, the plant will increase in size, and grow more and more.

If you choose to plant in a garden, you can place a stick next to it, which will serve as a guide to grow straight. The mango will be born in sections, and in the first ones, it will be possible to observe how the leaves alternate the green color with the reddish tone.

Once it has reached about sixty centimeters in height, it is clamped, the main bud is cut, so that other new branches are born from the armpits of the leaves, with this the tree is intended to open. Sometime later, it will be possible to observe how, after having made that cut, three tall and long branches will be born, which can be used as grafts later on.

At the time of grafting, it is important that the trunk is strong and well developed, so it can be done when it reaches the age of three years.

How soon do the fruits appear?

When grafting, it is important that the trunk is strong and has adequate stability, so it can be done when it reaches the age of three years. When it is approximately five years old so that the first fruits can be seen, however, when they are between three and four years old, some flowers begin to appear, in a whitish or greenish tone, in the spring, when there is rather a drier, and the temperature is rather average, as is the case with humidity.

Important tip:

When choosing a pot to plant the seed, you have to observe when it grows to replace it with another, which is better suited to its size, so that the roots have enough space in which to grow. Another aspect to take into account is that, if you live in a city or town with cold temperatures, it is better to have a dark color planter, such as brown or black, as this better capture and concentrate the heat than this. Plant requires for its development, also if you have the option it is better that they are made of clay, than plastic, because they better resist the passage of time, and do not deteriorate with sunlight. In addition, it is important that they have certain holes, not necessarily large, at the bottom so that they release the water that they do not want and do not need, absorbing only what is necessary.
