How to Choose Fast Growing Trees

Having an extension of land can sometimes be a headache. Some people build a huge pool. Others decide to dedicate themselves to fostering and raising some animals. And then there are those who decide to turn this resource into a beautiful natural landscape, planting all kinds of plants and making beautiful and leafy trees grow.

To be able to enjoy a landscape of these characteristics we have several options. The first is to plant slowly. Trees take several years to reach their final height; therefore, if we opt for traditional cultivation, we must have this handicap. Another option is to transplant trees, shrubs and small plants. The problem with this option is that it is more than likely that many of the plants will not survive the trip and will die shortly after being transplanted. Not to mention the inconvenience and cost of transporting large trees. The next option -which we are going to talk about in this article-, is to plant fast-growing trees so that our landscape develops at a high speed.

Fast -growing trees are those that, as their name suggests, take a short time to grow.  They are used, as we have already indicated, to complete a landscape in a short time. But, in addition to this, we may also want to have a grove for other reasons, such as having a barrier that protects from the wind. It can be to protect other weaker plants, a busy area, such as the porch, or a pond or pool. Another reason for selecting these trees is to receive their fruit. Many fruit trees are fast growing. It is possible that our choice is determined by this reason. We can also choose fast-growing trees to obtain a shaded area, for example, to cover an outdoor table or a rest area, with hammocks or loungers.

According to our intention, then, we must know how to choose fast-growing trees that are suitable for the situation.

What do you need to choose fast-growing trees?

  • A land suitable for planting fast-growing trees.
  • Know the possibilities of the land.
  • Know the function that fast-growing trees will fulfill.

Instructions for choosing fast-growing trees

  1. The first thing you have to do is know what conditions you have to choose and plant fast-growing trees.
  2. Then, go to a specialized nursery for advice on the possibilities of your land.
  3. In general, the factor that will determine how to choose fast-growing trees is their function:
  4. If we want tall trees that protect us from the wind, we will choose and plant some willows.
  5. If we want shorter and wider trees that provide good shade, we will choose the white maple, the paradise tree (bohemian olive tree) or the mulberry.
  6. If we want to get some fruit, the most suitable fast-growing trees are dwarf lemon and orange trees. The banana tree also gives very good results, especially if we plant it in a place without shade, since its branches grow rapidly in width to cover and shade more land.
  7. If we want to improve the appearance of the landscape, the ideal is to select smaller trees and shrubs and make personalized compositions. Choosing fast-growing trees according to an aesthetic function is very difficult since the tastes of each one can vary.  A good composition can be alternating two types of shrubs or low plants, one flowery and one non-flowery. Behind, create a background of Indian laurel or similar. Another very spectacular composition is that of weeping willow and red plum.
  8. Another determining factor is the capacity of the land:
  9. Some fast-growing trees do not allow the growth of several of them in a small space since they need many meters to take root.
  10. The existence of underground pipes must also be taken into account. Some trees expand a lot underground, but some of them have roots so thick and strong that they are capable of lifting and destroying water or gas pipes, with the inconvenience and danger that this entails.

Tips for Choosing Fast Growing Trees

  • Plant tree species at least two at a time.
  • Combine fruit trees with other non-fruit trees, creating a varied and visually attractive landscape. Orange and lemon trees, alternated with willows offer a spectacular view.
  • In general, be careful with pruning. Most of these trees do not accept severe pruning.  Find out, above all, which ones DO need to be pruned.
  • Take good care of your trees during their early years. Fast-growing trees are a very good option to quickly populate a piece of land, don’t waste them!
