If you want to know how to plant grass, we tell you that it is a simple procedure, which you can do yourself; doing it with seeds is an easy task whether you need to reseed parts of your lawn because they look bad or if you want to renew it completely; There are a variety of ways to sow the lawn, but here we will focus on the simplest so that you will not have any type of complication.
When should you plant grass?
If you are going to plant grass with seeds, it is best to do it in spring or at the beginning of autumn, as these are the moments when all plants grow more after having spent the summer or winter (where it is not good to plant the grass). So that you take into account when it is planted beginning in the autumn, the grass will begin to come out faster, this is because the earth will still be warm thanks to the summer, if you plant it in spring it will take a little longer to appear, but it will still be right.
You also have to take into account the area and the climate where you live, as weather conditions can vary; If you are located in a continental climate, the ideal is that you sow in the last days of March or in May and if you are going to sow in autumn, it should be between the end of August, September and the beginning of October. If you are located in an oceanic climate you have the advantage of slightly longer planting periods due to being in a humid and mild climate. The warm climates of the Mediterranean allow sowing from the beginning of March or the end of February, but in autumn you should not sow until September arrives, but you can do so until the first days of November.
The type of grass
There is a great variety of grass, this really is the mixture of different types of seed that receive the name of grasses, so then, depending on the type of seed and what percentage of each one it has, the type of grass will be given; It should be clarified that some are not better than others at first, only that each one can be better adapted to your type of garden, the area where it is located, the climate to which it is subjected, the characteristics of its soil, the insolation, the water, even how close it is to the sea. It is also important to know what use the lawn will have and the care it will receive.
So the best thing is that you ask a professional what is best for your area and describe very well all the characteristics of your garden, how the sun enters it, the shadows, among others. Once you are clear about what type of grass you are going to use, it is good that you memorize or write down what it is, in case you have to plant a new one later; it notes its composition more than it marks it, since we do not know if that name will continue to exist later on; if you plant a different lawn in each zone, the difference will be very noticeable and we imagine that you want a beautiful garden.
How to plant grass :
Drain
This is the first thing you should do, see if after the rains there are stagnant waters or puddles that do not disappear quickly, if you see that there is not good drainage, you should solve this before proceeding with a sowing, because you do not want your grass to not grow well or have fungal problems. If you see that your garden drains perfectly, that’s it, you don’t need to do anything; fixing drainage problems is another economic cost, so you should only do it when there is no other choice.
Irrigation
You must install irrigation systems that are of quality, that are automatic and that have a good design that is if you are going to plant from scratch, if what you are going to do is change some parts, check that your risk system is fine or see how you can improve it. Many times a bad irrigation system is what spoils the lawn, since it causes many parts to remain quite wet, while others are almost dry.
The false sowing
You will have to do this in case you are going to sow your lawn from scratch, or you are going to renew it completely, this consists of watering all your land for a time as if it had already been sown (but we already know that it has not), this will that the weeds (bad grasses) are born and germinate and then you can apply some herbicide to them, this way you will eliminate them and it will be more difficult for them to later be born in your lawn. If you are going to replant some areas that are damaged, you can spray a broadleaf herbicide before doing so and thus eliminate the weeds; if you see that there is moss, add iron sulfate.
The earth
You will need to get high quality topsoil, you will require a layer of approximately 10 centimeters, and this is what will guarantee that there is a good growth of the grass. It is important that you know that if this lawn is planted from scratch, you must till your land well, rent a motorized tractor and rake everything that is superficial, this must be done before adding the topsoil. If what you are going to do is renew the lawn, you should not till it, you would run a high risk of the irrigation pipes breaking, in this case just proceed to uproot the previous lawn to a depth of 7 centimeters. You can level the soil with a rake and then compact it with a roller.
If you need better drainage, you can make a mixture of sand (30%) and your topsoil (70%).
The seed
It is time for you to sow the seeds, you must do it by hand, or if you prefer you can rent a machine but it will be much more expensive, make sure that the seeds are distributed evenly; you should double the recommended dose, because not all of them germinate and others can become food for some animal. Rake gently so that the seeds enter but without moving them.
The watered
You must keep the seeds moist; water only a few minutes, but several times a day, as the surface dries quickly. You can do it in the early hours of the morning, at noon and when the afternoon falls, at night it will not be necessary to do it, because the humidity is maintained. The watering time will vary depending on different factors, such as the design you have or the time you planted. Water 10 minutes and check, so you will know if the times have to be increased or decreased; as the grass grows, the irrigation time is shorter.
The fertilizer
Save the compost for when the grass comes out; do it with one that is organic – mineral and that is slow release, these last up to three months and prevent burns. It is not advisable to fertilize from the seeding since you might have to do some reseeding, without fertilizer the grass grows slower and it will give you time to make some kind of correction.
